Measles case prompts updated vaccination guidelines in Sheridan and Dawes Counties

GORDON, Neb. - Because of the recent measles case in Sheridan County, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is updating vaccination recommendations for both Sheridan and Dawes counties.
Infants aged 6 to 11 months in those areas are now advised to receive an early dose of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine. This should be followed by two additional doses, starting at 12 months of age. Children older than 12 months who haven’t yet received their second dose are encouraged to get it as soon as possible, at least 28 days after the first dose.
“Vaccination and keeping other people around your children who are vaccinated is the safest for all children. Really the health of each of us depends on the health of all of us,” Jessica Davies, the MPH Health Director of Panhandle Public Health District (PPHD), told Mitch Gallant with News Channel Nebraska. “We want people to vaccinate, so that we are protecting younger ones who are too young to be vaccinated and anybody who is immune-compromised.”
PPHD in partnership with Gordon Memorial Hospital will be holding public vaccination clinics at Rushville Clinic Friday, June 6 and Friday, June 13 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Davies noted that the confirmed measles case is particularly concerning because the individual had not recently traveled, suggesting the virus could already be circulating within the local community.
Health officials have reached out to those identified as close contacts, placing them under active monitoring and advising them to remain at home. Others who may have been exposed are urged to complete a risk assessment at www.pphd.ne.gov. Those without internet access can call 308-633-2866 for assistance.
Potential exposure sites and timeframes include:
- Family Dollar in Rushville on May 17 from 9 a.m. to noon
- Gordon Clinic on May 21 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Little Lambs Preschool Track Meet in Gordon on May 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Davies emphasized that anyone experiencing measles symptoms—which include fever, runny nose, cough, and rash—should not go directly to Gordon Memorial Hospital or Gordon Clinic for testing. Instead, individuals should call 877-632-2856.
“Measles is highly contagious. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room,” said Davies.
Anyone with known exposure and no confirmed immunity is required to stay home and avoid contact with others for 21 days following their last exposure.
