DENVER — The National Weather Service in Denver has issued a tornado warning for northeastern Washington County in Colorado, in effect until 6:30 p.m. MDT Friday.

At 5:54 p.m., a confirmed tornado was located 8 miles north of Akron, moving southeast at 20 mph. Trained weather spotters confirmed the tornado on the ground.

The storm is also producing tennis ball-sized hail. Forecasters warn that flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes may be destroyed, and damage to roofs, windows, vehicles, and trees is likely.

Communities in the storm’s path include Akron, Otis, Platner, Fremont Butte and Hyde.

Residents are urged to seek shelter immediately in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, staying away from windows. If outdoors, in a mobile home or vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

The storm has a history of producing tornadoes.
