DENVER — The National Weather Service in Denver has issued a tornado warning for southwestern Logan County and north central Washington County in northeastern Colorado. The warning is in effect until 5:45 p.m. MDT Friday.

At 5:11 p.m., a confirmed tornado was located near Merino, approximately 11 miles southwest of Sterling, moving southeast at 20 mph. Weather spotters confirmed the tornado.

The storm is producing a damaging tornado. Flying debris will be hazardous to anyone caught without shelter. Damage to roofs, windows, vehicles and trees is likely. Mobile homes may be damaged or destroyed.

Areas in the tornado’s path include Merino, Prewitt Reservoir, Atwood, Logan Corners, Willard and Messex.

Residents in the warning area should take shelter immediately in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.
