DENVER — The National Weather Service in Denver has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northwestern Logan County and northeastern Weld County in northeastern Colorado.

The warning is in effect until 4:45 p.m. MDT Friday.

At 4:02 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located 13 miles west of Westplains, or about 35 miles northwest of Sterling, moving southeast at 20 mph.

The storm is capable of producing ping pong ball size hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph, according to radar.

Damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles is expected. Wind may also bring down trees and damage property. Injuries to people and animals outdoors are possible.

The community of Westplains is expected to be impacted.

Residents are advised to seek shelter inside a sturdy structure, away from windows. The storm has the potential to produce a tornado with little warning.
