Southeast Community College approves sale of Education Square to City of Lincoln

MILFORD – Southeast Community College will be moving out of downtown Lincoln. The school’s Board of Governors Tuesday approved the sale of Education Square, formerly known as the Centrum Building….to the City of Lincoln. The sale price was $5.2 million. SCC has occupied that building since 1995.
The City of Lincoln plans to use the building at 1111 “O” Street to be the city’s Central Library….a project expected to cost about $46 million dollars. The acquisition will result in the replacement of the Bennett Martin Public Library on South 14th Street….built in 1962.
The acquisition of the Education Square building provides 80,000 square feet of space for community and youth library services. A city-owned parking garage is adjacent, providing 1,057 spaces and a skywalk connection.
SCC continues to house programs in its Continuing Education Building in the east part of Lincoln. The school’s East “O” Street campus has been growing, with the addition of new buildings, student housing and expanded programs.
Meeting at the Milford Campus of SCC on Tuesday, the college board also approved the purchase of two Milford residential properties, for use by the college as it seeks approval for a Construction Technology facility that the college is planning.
The properties, at 311 South 5th and 315 South 5th…..are being purchased by SCC for a total of $731,000. Closing on the purchases is expected by the end of June.
