Downtown Sounds Headliner Jaelen Johnston finishes as runner-up on Season 27 of NBC’s The Voice

LOS ANGELES — Country artist Jaelen Johnston capped off a remarkable run on Season 27 of NBC’s The Voice Tuesday night, finishing as the national runner-up after a two-night finale.
Johnston, 21, of Derby, Kansas, became the first-ever “Super Save” contestant to reach the finale and nearly made history by taking home the top prize.
Instead, the title went to Adam David of Team Bublé, while Team Kelsea’s Johnston secured second place. Team Legend’s Renzo finished third, Team Adam’s Lucia Flores-Wiseman was fourth, and Lincoln native Jadyn Cree of Team Bublé rounded out the top five.
Tuesday’s live finale featured duets between the finalists and their coaches. Johnston and his coach, Kelsea Ballerini, performed a powerful rendition of “Whiskey Lullaby."
Johnston’s solo performances in the finale Monday night included Dierks Bentley’s “What Was I Thinkin’” and Chris Stapleton’s “Cold” — the latter drawing a standing ovation and effusive praise from Ballerini.
“I just wanted to be moved and inspired," Ballerini told Johnston before the results announcement. "I wanted to work with good people first and good artists second. From the blinds till now, you are consistently that. You're a good, good man. And you're a great, great artist. You're going to get it, whether it's here tonight or beyond this. I promise you."
Johnston, a former employee at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, left his job to pursue music full-time. His heartfelt performance of “I Drive Your Truck” by Lee Brice in the semifinals, a tribute to his late cousin, helped secure his spot in the top five and endeared him to fans across the country.
“I definitely appreciate the belief since the start of the show,” Johnston said to Ballernini. “Being a super saver in the finale is crazy to me. I can't wrap my head around it. I couldn't be more thankful for you. No matter where this goes, thank you so much.”
The Season 27 finale also featured performances from Kelly Clarkson, Chance the Rapper, Alicia Keys, Blake Shelton and Season 22 winner Bryce Leatherwood.
Johnston is set to headline Downtown Sounds in Sidney on Friday, July 18.
