POTTER -- A 10-year-old Potter girl focused on getting her place in a childrens outdoor magazine.

It would be easy to say Brandie Bulen passed some of her excitement for the outdoors to her daughter Zeriah. Zeriah is in a contest that would unite the past and the present.

"I grew up on National Geographic, and GeoKid and Ranger Rick. So, Ranger Rick has kind of died off in these last years. The owner, Jeff Cohen, has decided to ramp things up, and he's doing two different events. One of the events is you can go to national parks and you can get a pamphlet, and you have to fill out certain things on the pamphlet. You get a badge, a prize or something for each national park that a child fills out," mom Brandie Bulen said.

The other event requires community support.

"The second thing is that it's all based off of voting, and her initial responses in the beginning. She has a chance to earn $20,000 and appear in the Ranger Rick magazine with Jeff Cohen," Bulen said.

She said she and Zeriah took a chance, entering Zeriah in the contest.

"So, just for fun we decided to sign up for the Ranger Rick magazine with Jeff Cohen. We answered some initial questions, filled out a profile for what she does outdoors, and we're now to the final stage which, it's very simple. The kid with the most votes gets to be in the Ranger Rick magazine," she said.

Voting begins in about five days. Bulen will be posting notices of open voting on her social media pages.

Zeriah's top outdoor passion is skiing. Her excitement for the slopes started when she was put on a pair of skis at 3 years old. She now proficient at the Black Diamonds, Double Black. She also enjoys fishing with her grandparents.
