GERING - A feathered fugitive was taken into custody Tuesday night thanks to the quick action of the Riverside Discovery Center’s animal care team.

According to a social media post from the zoo, Gering Police Department requested assistance with a "suspicious individual", a runaway peacock, reported near S Street in Gering.

The Riverside Discovery Center's keeper team responded quickly, and Keeper Malakai Howard successfully apprehended the bird. According to the post, Howard was able to safely tackle the peacock and secure it in his vehicle until authorities arrived.

While the peacock was not part of the Riverside Discovery Center’s collection, staff were happy to assist local law enforcement.

“The suspect has since been cleared of all charges and is set to be released shortly — to its rightful owner,” RDC said in the post.

The zoo thanked first responders and expressed appreciation for the strong partnership between the Riverside Discovery Center and area law enforcement.

The bird was not injured in the incident.
