DERBY, Kan. — Jaelen Johnston, the 21-year-old country artist from Derby, Kansas, is headed to the Season 27 finale of NBC’s The Voice after advancing through the Top 12 live semifinals this week.

Johnston, who is coached by country singer Kelsea Ballerini, earned one of five finalist spots following Monday night’s performance of “I Drive Your Truck” by Lee Brice. The emotional tribute honored his late cousin, who died in a highway accident at age 16.

“I think it’s the perfect song choice for the moment, because it encompasses everything that country is about,” Johnston said. “It tells a story, showing that vulnerable side of you.”

Ballerini, who used her Super Save to bring Johnston back to the competition before the semifinals, praised his performance on Monday night.

“You just made your mama and cousin proud. You’re making country music so proud already,” Ballerini said. “I’m so honored to be your coach.”

Johnston is the last remaining country artist in the competition and will compete in the finale alongside Renzo (Team Legend), Lucia Flores-Wiseman (Team Adam), and Lincoln native Jadyn Cree (Team Bublé), who performed “I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tiffany during Monday’s show.

One additional singer, selected based on Tuesday’s performances, will also compete in the finale.

“The Voice has definitely been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Johnston said. “To represent Kelsea in her first finale would be a dream come true.”

Johnston is scheduled to perform in Sidney as the headliner of Downtown Sounds on Friday, July 18.

The Season 27 finale airs Monday, May 19, with results revealed Tuesday, May 20.
