Kearney elementary students roll into school for national bike day
KEARNEY, Neb. - A Central Nebraska school is rolling into summer with a special celebration.
With the sun shining and excitement in the air, students at Park Elementary in Kearney arrived to school Wednesday morning on bikes, scooters or anything with wheels as a part of both National Bike Day and Roll to School Day.
Young students were greeted with smiles and high-fives from the UNK wrestling team, local police officers, and teachers.
“This was just such a fun environment for the kids,” said Taylor Peters, a first-grade teacher who will be stepping into the role of principal next year. "I saw a lot of families wearing helmets, parents walking with strollers alongside their kids. What a fun way for families to just get out on a Wednesday morning and get to school," she said.
The front of the school buzzed with activity. Alongside the high-fives and cheers, CHI Health staff handed out vouchers for free helmets and promoted bike safety which was a key theme of the morning.
Students who wore helmets were entered into prize drawings for gear like reflectors and bike lights.
Peters said events like this not only highlight safety but also address real community needs.
“There are families who may not have the means to buy a helmet or pads, so this is just a great opportunity to raise awareness and also support those who need it,” said Peters.
The school encouraged families who lived farther away to drop off bikes at Harmon Pool so that everyone could participate.
With an overflowing bike rack and plenty of smiles, the morning was a success for kids getting ready for the summer months.
