UNK serving up three new sand volleyball courts
KEARNEY, Neb. – A new recreational space is coming to the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
UNK will host a groundbreaking ceremony at 2 p.m. April 24 to kick off construction of three sand volleyball courts on the former University Residence South site, located northwest of the College of Education building.
The project, driven by student leadership and supported by multiple campus units, reflects the university’s commitment to providing more recreation and engagement opportunities for students and the broader Kearney community.
Student Government President Sam Schroeder, who played a key role in advancing the initiative, and interim Chancellor Charlie Bicak will speak at the event.
“This has been a true student-driven project from day one,” Schroeder said. “We’ve talked about building sand courts for years, and I’m proud that we finally turned that conversation into action. These courts will bring students together, create new traditions and give everyone more ways to stay active and connected.”
Construction is already underway with dirt work at the site, and underground drainage installation is planned for later this month.
UNK is currently seeking proposals for concrete and other construction materials, with the goal of completing the courts by late summer.
The $200,000 project is being built by UNK Facilities and is funded through contributions from UNK Student Government, the Office of the Chancellor, UNK Athletics and Campus Recreation.
“This project represents what’s best about UNK – collaboration, leadership and a focus on student life,” Bicak said. “When students bring forward great ideas, we do everything we can to support them. These courts will enhance our campus experience and strengthen ties with the community.”
The sand volleyball courts will be available primarily for UNK students and organizations, including intramurals, club teams and Loper athletics, but will also be open to the public, offering a unique space for campus-community interaction.
UNK is exploring the possibility of installing lighting for evening play and amenities such as seating, shade, storage, event power and drink stations– pending final budget outcomes.
The courts are part of a broader vision to enhance outdoor recreation on campus.
The site will leave room for future development to the north, in line with the university’s ongoing efforts to expand wellness and social opportunities for students.
