Wheeler whiffs 10 and Turner returns to lineup with 3 hits as Phillies top Rockies 5-1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Zack Wheeler struck out 10 in seven sharp innings and Trea Turner had three hits in his return to the starting lineup as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-1 on Wednesday night.
Wheeler (1-0) allowed just one run and three hits. He reached double digits in strikeouts for the 26th time in his career by striking out three batters in the seventh.
Turner, who missed two games last weekend with lower back spasms, entered as a pinch hitter late in Philadelphia's home opener Monday against Colorado. Back in the leadoff spot Wednesday, he delivered an RBI single in the seventh.
Kyle Schwarber had a run-scoring double and scored on an RBI groundout by J.T. Realmuto. Schwarber has at least one hit in each of the Phillies' five games this season.
Edmundo Sosa, who filled in at shortstop while Turner was out, started at second base and had three hits and two RBIs. Sosa has at least two hits in all four games he's played this year.
Rockies starter Kyle Freeland (0-1) gave up three runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. Hunter Goodman homered off Wheeler in the seventh and has gone deep in back-to-back games.
Key moment
With two runners on in the eighth, Phillies reliever Matt Strahm struck out Ezequiel Tovar with an 80 mph slider to preserve a two-run lead.
Key stat
Wheeler has pitched at least six innings and allowed two or fewer runs in 13 consecutive starts, the longest active streak in the majors. He became the 20th pitcher in big league history with a streak that long.
Up next
The teams wrap up their three-game series Thursday. Antonio Senzatela (0-0, 0.00) starts for Colorado, and Taijuan Walker makes his season debut for Philadelphia.
Denver Broncos sign former Colts QB Sam Ehlinger as their third quarterback
DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos added former University of Texas and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger to their QB room Wednesday.
Ehlinger replaces Zach Wilson, who signed with Miami earlier in free agency, as the third quarterback behind second-year starter Bo Nix and seventh-year backup Jarrett Stidham.
Ehlinger has played in eight NFL games and started three, all with the Colts, who drafted him in the sixth round in 2021. In his pro career, he has completed 64 of 101 passes for 573 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions.
All 5 starters out for exhausted Nuggets against Spurs following double-0T heartbreaker
DENVER (AP) — Denver coach Michael Malone declared all five of his starters out for the exhausted Nuggets' game against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night.
Denver's 140-139 double-overtime home loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night played a role in Malone resting his stars.
Nikola Jokic scored a career-best 61 points against Minnesota and Malone said he informed his star after that heartbreaking loss that he'd be sitting out against the Spurs less than 24 hours later.
Jokic, who has been dealing with elbow and ankle injuries, and Christian Braun, who's been dealing with a sore foot, both logged 53 minutes against the Wolves.
Also out against San Antonio were Aaron Gordon (calf), Jamal Murray (hamstring) and Michael Porter Jr., who's tending to a family situation and also missed Tuesday night's game.
“Well, I mean our identity isn't just tied to five starters,” Malone said before tip-off. “Our identity and our culture permeates the entire locker room. So, the group that we go with tonight, whoever that is, has the responsibility to go out and play Denver Nuggets basketball.
“You've heard me say this often: I don't care who's available for us. I mean, our expectation and our preparation is to go out there and win this game,” Malone added. “It's not going to be easy, obviously. But we have more than enough in that locker room to go out there and beaet the Spurs.”
In the past, Jokic has fought to play on nights Malone wanted him to rest, but Malone said this time he wasn't open for a discussion over the issue.
“I looked at the stat sheet and I saw he played a lot of minutes, so it was a back-to-back and I just went up to him after the game, I said, ‘Hey, you’re out tomorrow.' This wasn't going to be a discussion. Because Nikola will play through anything and sometimes you have to be the coach,” Malone said. “And he understood.”
