LINCOLN — Power is out for thousands in Lincoln after extreme wind caused power lines to become tangled.

The outage happened just after 6:15 Thursday night. A social media post from the Lincoln Police Department says tangled power lines caused the outage. In the post, officials said to avoid downtown and to treat dark intersections as four-way stops.

At 8:00 p.m., Lincoln Electric System said 4,900 customers were still without power. The outages are scattered across the city, but some concentrated areas include downtown, 48th and O and N 84th St. near Cornhusker Highway.

In addition to the tangled lines, Lincoln Police said weather conditions were causing some crashes.
