Ice Jam causes rising water, highway closure near Columbus
COLUMBUS, Neb. - Ice buildup along the Loup River levee is causing rising water levels which are flooding roads and forcing traffic to reroute.
Platte County Emergency Management reported Thursday that an ice jam on the Loup River had spread across the westbound lanes of Highway 30, roughly one mile west of the Highway 81 junction, south of Columbus.
Emergency management had previously implemented a one-lane closure with a pilot car. Hours later, the Nebraska Department of Transportation announced that Hwy 30 will be fully closed from Silver Creek to the Hwy 81 intersection south of Columbus.
City Public Works Director Chuck Sliva issued an advisory Thursday, warning residents to avoid traveling in the affected areas due to hazardous conditions.
