Winter storm forces school closures, delays across Nebraska and Colorado
SIDNEY, Neb. — Dangerous winter weather conditions and extreme cold have led to multiple school closures and delays across the Nebraska Panhandle and northeast Colorado.
Sidney Public Schools announced all classes and activities are canceled Tuesday, Feb. 18, due to hazardous weather. Superintendent Andrew Farber issued a statement emphasizing the district’s priority of keeping students, staff and families safe.
“We encourage everyone to take necessary precautions and limit exposure to the cold,” Farber said.
Sidney is one of several school districts adjusting schedules in response to the severe weather. The following districts have also announced closures and delays for Tuesday:
- Alliance Public Schools - Closed
- Banner County Schools - Closed
- Bayard Public Schools – Closed
- Chadron State College - Closed
- Chase County Schools - Closed. 10am late start on Wednesday, February 19th
- Creek Valley Public Schools - Closed.
- Fleming Schools - Remote learning.
- Garden County Schools - Closed
- Grace Gardens Preschool in Sidney - Closed
- Julesburg RE-1 Schools - Closed.
- Kimball Public Schools - Closed.
- Merino Schools - Closed.
- Morrill Public Schools - Closed.
- Leyton Public Schools - Closed. HSGBB Sub District Leyton vs Creek Valley Postponed from Tuesday to Wednesday at 4 p.m.
- Ogallala Public Schools - Closed.
- Peetz School (Peetz, Colo.) – Closed. All school activities canceled.
- Perkins County Schools - Closed.
- Potter-Dix Public Schools – Closed. No school activities.
- Scottsbluff Public Schools – Closed.
- South Platte Public Schools - Closed
- Valley RE-1 (Sterling, Colo.) – Closed.
- Western Nebraska Community College - All three campuses in Sidney, Alliance and Scottsbluff are closed

With dangerously low temperatures and difficult travel conditions expected, officials urge residents to stay indoors when possible and take precautions against the extreme cold.
