LINCOLN, Neb. - A new era of Husker Volleyball is set to begin, as Dani Busboom-Kelly takes the reigns to one of the winningest programs in the sports history, but as one chapter begins, one also comes to an end.

With John Cook retiring, Cortland native Dani Busboom-Kelly takes over for the winningest head coach of the 21st century. All this news has meant a lot of change for the program and it's players.

After DBK's welcome ceremony on Thursday, the Huskers reflected on Cook's retirement and the future of the program.

"It was a lot of sadness that coach was leaving, but also appreciation for what he has done," junior Bergen Reilly said. "Then like 30 seconds later we found out Dani was coming and we all knew that was the perfect fit."

“I was scared, because at first it was ‘I’m [John Cook] retiring, I’m leaving’ and then shortly it was ‘Dani’s coming’ and there was this relief,” senior Bekka Allick said. “She even called us the same day and I told her ‘I’, happy it’s you’… It was a relief, she’s bene through a change in college for John Cook. She’s played here, she’s from here, I truly believe we’re in really good hands.”

As John Cook mentioned in his retirement presser last week, the team had a players only meeting to discuss the news. Junior Andi Jackson said the team focused on unity and making the transition easy for both Cook and DBK.

"We all just agreed to take five minutes and when we went to the locker room, we talked about it being a roller coaster of emotions," Jackson said. "But we said we'd get through it together, and talked about how to support Dani in all the ways she would need... Said it would take all 13 of us and we wanted to make sure we were on the same page and making sure we were there for Dani and there for each other during this big shift."

John Cook had a meaningful relationship with Harper Murray. The rising junior says the news was difficult, but the change is one she believes in.

"He's done a lot for me and I was in shock... I called my mom after I met with him and I just sat up in his office for an hour until the team got to the gym," Murray said. "I was really upset for the two days after, but I trust coach with Dani and I believe he's going to put us in the best position possible to win even if he's not here."

Dani Busboom-Kelly is a former Husker national champion as a player and compiled a 203-44 record leading Louisville for the past eight seasons.
