Congressman Mike Flood's thoughts on tariffs, especially for farmers
NEBRASKA -- These tariffs may see prices go up across the board.
The Nebraska Farm Bureau is concerned about the retaliatory tariffs when a third of annual income for farmers comes from international customers.
Canada provides close to 80% of the potash fertilizer used in the state's agriculture. How this added tax on those imports impacts farmers remains to be seen.
"We finally have a president that's paying attention to trade again," said Republican Congressman Mike Flood. "I will say tariff's can be an effective tool for securing economic victories for America. A reminder, that both the U.S. NCA and the China Trade Deal were achieved through the strategic use of tariff's and threat of additional ones."
Flood also said that the first Trump Administration provided support to farmers who were most impacted by the trade war with China.
Nebraska's top five exports from 2024 were beef, soybeans, corn, pork and soybean meal with the three countries purchasing almost all of Nebraska's corn exports and 90% of its soybean exports.
