'It was time': Cook thankful for 25 years, confident in future of Husker Volleyball
LINCOLN, Neb. - A chapter 25 years long has come to an end. On Thursday, an emotional John Cook recapped a quarter century of building Nebraska Volleyball into a national powerhouse and growing women’s sports to new heights.
“I want to thank all the coaches, players, I haven’t even gotten through all my texts yet,” Cook said. “How many people appreciate Nebraksa Volleyball, it feels great. We want to eb a difference maker and leave a legacy.”
“It’s been very emotional for a lot of people,” Athletic Director Troy Dannen said. “Yesterday was bittersweet, talking to the team, breaking the news to everyone and announcing the transition plan in its fully executed form.”
Four national championships, a dozen Final Four’s, and 14 conference titles… The winningest head coach of the century is calling it quits. Cook says there wasn’t one specific reason for making the change, but just a feeling inside. One where he felt confident in where he left the program, and one of confidence in his successor, Nebraksa’s own Dani Busboom-Kelly.
"I don't know that where was a light bulb moment, it was just a feeling," Cook said. "I came in to Troy and told him I think we needed to start thinking about a succession.. Talking to Dani (Busboom-Kelly), the time felt right."
Busboom-Kelly is a former national champion at Nebraska, who’s spent the last eight years building Louisville into a powerhouse of their own. While he may be moving on, Cook says he’ll still be around to support a program that will always be in his heart.
“Am I going to miss this place? Hell yeah I’m going to miss it,” Cook said. “But I will be the biggest cheerleader.”
Sources confirmed Wednesday, Dani Busboom-Kelly will retain assistant coaches Jalen Reyes and Kelly Hunter on the Huskers coaching staff. The Cortland native, and Freeman alum, will formally be introduced on Thursday, Feb. 6 at the Devaney Center.
