PLEASANTON, Neb. — The community of Ravenna is in mourning.

17-year-old Gavin Reisbeck died Christmas night in a car accident. Three teenaged passengers, also from Ravenna, were injured in the crash.

Reisbeck was a standout athlete for Ravenna High School, starring in golf, football and basketball. Just two days after he passed, his basketball teammates took the court in the Pleasanton Holiday Tournament.

Playing with heavy hearts, the Bluejays pulled off a 38-35 win over Anselmo-Merna. It was an emotional ending for the players and head coach Adam Mingus.

“Picture perfect ending for a night when we kind of needed it," Mingus said. "We couldn’t quite build a huge lead and found a way to dig out a gritty win. As a team, as a community, we really needed that.”

The team had the option not to play, but chose to compete. Mingus said it gave the players a chance to just be kids for a night.

“I’m extremely proud and extremely impressed with our guys because I know this situation isn’t easy," Mingus said.

Before the game, the teams had a moment of silence. Afterward, they met at mid court for a prayer.

“That stuff is just so important," Mingus said. "I don’t even have great words to even describe what those things mean.”

Reisbeck was a junior at Ravenna. He started at quarterback for the Bluejays in the fall and was a two-time state qualifier in golf. He led the basketball team with 15 points and 7 rebounds per game.

“He was a great kid, great athlete and our community’s hearts are pretty much torn,” Mingus said.

The accident is still under investigation. The Buffalo County Attorney's Office has ordered an autopsy.
