SIDNEY – The Sidney American Legion Seniors baseball team split a pair of games to begin the week ahead of the July 4th holiday. Sidney pounded 14 hits on the way to a 17-0, three-inning win over the Bridgeport Bombers on Monday at Sidney’s Legion Field. However, a five-run third inning by Chadron on Tuesday doomed Sidney as the fell to Platte Valley Bank Post 12 at home 5-3.

Sidney pitchers Conner Hurt, Cole Raffelson, and Rhyder Bayne combined to hold Bridgeport to just two hits and no runs while striking out five Bombers and walking just three on Monday night. Sam Hulbert paced Sidney at the plate going three-for-three with three RBIs and two runs scored.

On Tuesday, Sidney sent the winning run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the comeback ended with a strikeout to end the Sidney rally. Chadron’s five-run third inning featured a pair of hit batsmen, two walks, one of them with the bases loaded, an error and a double. Sidney fought back with two runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh. Kyle Jaggers took the loss for Sidney, going 5 ? innings, giving up five runs on four hits while striking out 10 and walking only two.

The Sidney Juniors picked up a pair of wins defeating Bridgeport 20-2 in three innings on Monday and then got a stellar outing on the mound Tuesday from Rhyder Bayne in a 12-0, four-inning, shutout of Chadron. Bayne gave up just three hits while striking out eight and walking two over hos four inning of work.

Sidney travels to Scottsbluff on Saturday to face the Westco Zephyrs in a Junior/Senior doubleheader. The Junior game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. MDT followed by the Senior game at 7:00 p.m.
