COLUMBUS, Neb. -- An officer-involved shooting that transpired on Feb. 6, 2024, and resulted in the death of 17-year-old Chase Ditter, is now headed to a grand jury.

The Columbus Police Department was recently notified by the Nebraska State Patrol that a preliminary investigation has been turned over to the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.

The Attorney General’s Office will set a grand jury date and location and then notify all involved of the date/location and process, according to Columbus Police Chief Charles Sherer.

No information will be released by the Attorney General’s Office before the grand jury, the chief noted.

“The AG’s Office doesn’t want to give anything that may be prejudicial to that process,” Sherer said, adding the investigation is still open so therefore additional witnesses and evidence could be introduced.

The City of Columbus will respect the agencies’ investigation process, though has no control over its length or when more information will be released.

Columbus Police officers were conducting a welfare check at about 1 p.m. Feb. 6, at a residence on the 3600 block of 39th Ave. in Columbus, as previously reported by the Nebraska State Patrol. During the encounter, a Columbus Police officer deployed a Taser that made contact with Ditter. Another officer subsequently discharged their duty weapon. NSP later identified the teen.

In accordance with the Columbus Police Department policy, a request was made to the Nebraska State Patrol to investigate the incident.

Three of the four Columbus Police officers involved in the incident have returned to full duty, while the fourth will remain on administrative leave until the grand jury’s determination.

“It is the Department’s policy not to release the names of any of the officers involved until after the investigation and grand jury process is completed,” Sherer said.

NSP did not share any opinion about the incident, as its policy is to let the grand jury investigators formulate their own opinions.

The City of Columbus reiterated its thoughts are with everyone affected by the incident and extends its deepest sympathies to all involved. It remains committed to serving and protecting the community with the utmost professionalism and transparency.
