COLUMBUS, Neb. -- Multiple species of fish have died-off in rivers near Columbus.

Nebraska Game and Parks biologists said they are investigating the extent of a fish die-off that is happening along the Platte and Loup Rivers near Columbus and downstream.

Officials said that multiple species of dead fish were documented along the waterway July 28, but more are expected to die as the hot and dry conditions continue and water levels decline.

The biologists said that the extreme heat has led to water temperatures measuring over 90 degrees in shallow stretches of the rivers in recent days. They said this is likely the cause of the die-off.

The Game and Parks said that it is hoped the cool temperatures in the forecast will reduce additional effects.
