COLUMBUS, Neb. -- A police department in Platte County is holding a clinic this weekend to keep pets in the area safe.

The Columbus Police Department is holding an animal license clinic Saturday, Oct. 1 at Pet Care Specialists.

The City of Columbus has an ordinance requiring residents to have a license for their pets.

Angie Lopez, a community service technician with the CPD, told News Channel Nebraska about the importance of pet owners having a license for their pets.

"If your dog or cat is wearing that tag on their collar, it helps us identify who the owner is and take their pet home, instead of taking it to the shelter," Lopez said. "If your pet is at the shelter, then fines accrue and you have to pay to get your pet out."

The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Attendees must bring a proof of rabies vaccine certificate.

Licenses will cost $13 for neutered and spayed animals and $25 for intact pets.

Residents will also be able to purchase lifetime licenses for $50 for pets over the age of five and $100 for pets under the age of five.
