Scottsbluff man awaits sentencing hearing for attacks against three strangers
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. -- A Scottsbluff man has pleaded no contest to charges related three assaults in what authorities called an unprovoked attack.
On July 17th, around 12:45 a.m. a Scottsbluff Police officer said he was patrolling the 1100 block when he heard yelling and glass breaking.
The officer reported stepping out of his vehicle and witnessing a man physically assaulting multiple individuals.
Police said they recognized the man as 43-year-old Billy Crider.
SPD said the officer entered the backyard where the disturbance was occurring and ordered everyone to get on the ground. According to the officer, Crider then turned to face the officer and began walking towards him with balled-up fists and reportedly threatened the officer. At that point, according to SPD accounts, the officer deployed his TASER device, subduing the suspect.
The officer reported speaking to multiple witnesses after the encounter. The owner of the home said Crider was pacing back and forth down the street when they lost sight of him. Witnesses said Crider later jumped over the eight-foot back fence.
A female witness said Crider approached her and threw her to the ground by her shoulders. A man said he then approached Crider and was also thrown on the ground. According to authorities, both witnesses said they believed Crider was going to continue to assault them, when another man approached Crider and was punched in the face by Crider causing a severe laceration to his right eye which required medical attention and stitches.
All the victims reportedly said they did not know Crider and it was an unprovoked attack.
Police reported they searched Crider, which led to the discovery of a knife and a golf ball in the center of a handkerchief in his shorts pocket.
Crider was charged with two counts of third-degree assault, second-degree assault, obstruction of government operations, possession of a deadly weaponry a prohibited person, and trespassing.
Crider had pretrial on Aug. 22, and his trespassing charge was dropped. Crider pleaded no contest, and was found guilty of all other charges.
Crider has his sentencing hearing set for Sept. 21.
