COLUMBUS, Neb. -- Columbus Community Hospital recently presented Emma Labenz with the Sheaf of Wheat Award for hospital employees who have made a lasting impression on patients or their families.

Labenz is a certified nursing assistant in the acute care unit. Colleen Jorgensen, RRT, a co-worker, nominated her for the award.

In her nomination letter, Jorgensen praised Labenz for always having a smile on her face and a cheerful tone in her voice. Jorgensen also noted Labenz’s passion for providing the best care for her patients.

Jorgensen highlighted one instance in which Labenz helped care for a COVID-19 patient.

“We knew this patient was likely nearing the end of life, but we didn’t expect it to happen as suddenly as it did,” Jorgensen said. “Thankfully, Emma was there with her calming presence to help keep the patient comfortable. She took it upon herself to retrieve the Bible from the nightstand and began reading to the patient. I’ve worked in hospitals for 13 years and have never encountered a more beautiful end-of-life experience. Emma is truly one of a kind.”

Labenz received a certificate of recognition and a Sheaf of Wheat plaque in honor of this award.
