SIDNEY, Neb. — Strong winds and dangerous wind chills are expected to continue across the Nebraska Panhandle and surrounding High Plains through Sunday as a High Wind Warning remains in effect, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning remains in place until 3 p.m. Sunday for portions of the Nebraska Panhandle, including Cheyenne, Morrill, Dawes and Box Butte counties. Forecasters say northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph are expected.

The strong winds are expected to create hazardous travel conditions, especially for lightweight or high-profile vehicles such as campers and tractor-trailers.

The National Weather Service said areas of blowing dust, blowing smoke from the Morrill Fire or blowing snow could also reduce visibility at times.

Cold air moving into the region overnight has produced much colder temperatures across the High Plains. Wind chills early Sunday morning dropped below zero in some locations as strong north winds continued across the area.

Similar conditions are affecting a large portion of Nebraska, where a High Wind Warning remains in effect through Sunday evening. Forecasters say north winds between 30 and 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected across portions of central, north-central and western Nebraska.

Looking ahead, forecasters expect very gusty winds to return early in the week along with increasing fire weather concerns.

Temperatures are also expected to rise significantly later in the week, with record-breaking warmth possible across the region.

Authorities are urging residents to secure loose outdoor items and use caution while traveling during the high wind event.
