All enlisted members of the Nebraska National Guard will soon be able to attend one in-state university without worrying about the cost of tuition.

Doane University in Crete is unveiling the Citizen Soldier Scholarship this week.

This scholarship will allow all enlisted members of the Nebraska Army National Guard to receive free tuition to attend the school.

In a press release, the University says, "This inaugural award symbolizes the powerful intersection of scholarship and service. Doane University is proud to honor students who commit themselves to both intellectual growth and service to our nation.”

Current Doane student Aileen Rueda, a newly enlisted member of the Nebraska National Guard, will become recipient of this scholarship on Friday afternoon. The school is hosting a ceremony at 1:30 p.m. where Brig. Gen. Brian L. Medcalf, Land Component Commander of the Nebraska Army National Guard, will administer Rueda's official Oath of Enlistment, and university president Roger Hughes will formally present her with the scholarship.

"The Citizen Soldier Scholarship reflects Doane University’s commitment to supporting students who embody the dual callings of academic excellence and military service," the school said in the release. "The scholarship recognizes individuals who demonstrate leadership, civic responsibility, and dedication to serving both community and country."
