OMAHA, Neb - A large sinkhole shocked drivers at the intersection of 67th and Pacific Streets on Tuesday, creating a dramatic scene in the heart of Omaha. The pavement suddenly gave way, trapping two vehicles that were traveling through the area and dropping them down into the opening.

Omaha Fire Department officials on the scene said both drivers were treated at the scene but were not seriously hurt. They say one driver needed help from bystanders to get out of his vehicle because of the depth of the sinkhole.

Firefighter Sergio Robles said an investigation into the cause is underway and that preliminary evidence shows that there was a water leak on site. He said the leak, combined with the weight of the vehicles, could have caused the soil to erode.

As of 5:30 p.m., response and rescue crews are working to remove the vehicles using heavy machinery. Drivers are advised to avoid the area until further notice.
