Husker notes: Nebraska sweeps Northwestern 47-0 on Senior Day

In the final home dual of the season, the No. 5 Nebraska wrestling team swept all 10 weight classes in a 47-0 victory over Northwestern (3-7, 1-6 Big Ten) on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at the Devaney Center.

In the final home dual of the season, the No. 5 Nebraska wrestling team swept all 10 weight classes in a 47-0 victory over Northwestern (3-7, 1-6 Big Ten) on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at the Devaney Center. The Huskers recorded six bonus-point victories, including five tech. falls and a major decision, to secure the shutout.

All three senior starters earned a tech. fall win as NU posted its largest margin of victory since the 2020-21 season, when the Big Red also defeated Indiana 47-0. The Huskers collected 36 takedowns on the afternoon and improved to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in Big Ten competition.

The dual began at 125, where Kael Lauridsen built a 6-0 lead over No. 24 Dedrick Navarro behind a takedown and a three-point nearfall in the first period. After two escapes by Lauridsen and a pair of takedowns by Navarro, the Bennington, Neb., native sealed the bout with a late takedown to earn an 11-6 decision and his second dual victory of the season.

At 133, No. 10 Jacob Van Dee picked up his second tech. fall of the season, recording an early takedown and four-point nearfall against Luis Bazan. Van Dee added four more takedowns to close out the bout, 20-4.

In his final home appearance, No. 4 Brock Hardy dominated No. 31 Billy DeKraker at 141. The senior from Brigham City, Utah, limited Dekraker to two escapes while tallying four takedowns and two near falls to earn a 18-2 tech. fall and extend Nebraska’s lead to 13-0.

No. 19 Chance Lamer continued the momentum at 149, scoring six first-period takedowns against August Hibler to take a 19-5 lead. Lamer added another takedown in the second period to secure a 22-6 tech. fall.

Nebraska added 12 team points by forfeit at 157 and 165, as No. 3 Antrell Taylor and Jagger Condomitti were both awarded victories.

Action resumed at 174, where No. 4 Christopher Minto fought for a 6-3 decision win over No. 30 Eddie Enright. After Enright scored an early takedown, Minto responded with a two-point near fall and later sealed the match with a late escape and takedown.

At 184, No. 6 Silas Allred grabbed the Huskers’ fourth tech. fall in his final home bout. The senior from Anderson, Ind., controlled his match from the start, recording three takedowns in the first period and adding four more with riding time to finish a 24-8 victory.

No. 9 Camden McDanel followed at 197 with a dominant performance against Alex Smith. McDanel recorded multiple takedowns and nearfalls en route to a 22-5 tech. fall victory, pushing Nebraska’s lead to 43-0.

At heavyweight, No. 4 AJ Ferrari closed the dual with a 17-4 major decision over Dirk Morely. Ferrari totaled four takedowns across the first two periods and added an escape to cap Nebraska’s 47-0 sweep.

The Huskers head back on the road for the remainder of the regular season. The Big Red will compete in a double-dual weekend, traveling to Illinois on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. (CT) before facing Indiana on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. (CT). The matchup at Illinois will be streamed on B1G+, while the dual at Indiana will air on BTN.

Huskers Drop Close Battle to Washington


The No. 10 Nebraska softball team tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth but allowed a Washington run in the bottom of the seventh and fell to the Huskies, 3-2, on Sunday morning in San Antonio, Texas.

With the loss, the Huskers moved to 3-2 on the season while UW improved to 2-2. NU split series with No. 1 Texas and Washington on the weekend and grabbed a victory over host UTSA.

Washington outhit NU, 10-7, while the Huskers’ lone error in the first inning, which allowed the Huskies to take the lead, proved to be costly.

Morgan Reimer (1-1) claimed the win in the circle for UW, while Jordy Frahm (1-2) took the loss. Frahm threw a complete game and allowed 10 hits and two earned runs while striking out 10.

Kacie Hoffmann went 2-for-3 with a double, while Hannah Camenzind hit a solo home run. Jesse Farrell also added a double and Frahm, Emmerson Cope and Lauren Camenzind registered a hit apiece to account for the rest of the NU offense.

Washington grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Husker error in the bottom of the first.

NU tied it up in the top of the second with a H. Camenzind solo shot, her second of the weekend.

The Huskies took a 2-1 lead with a home run in the bottom of the fifth.

Farrell opened the top of the sixth with a double and scored on a Hoffmann double to left field to tie the score at 2-2.

Ava Caroll singled for UW in the bottom of the seventh and went to second and third on a pair of wild pitches. She scored off a Jadyn Glab single to clinch the win for the Huskies.

The Huskers will travel to Clearwater, Fla., for the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational next weekend. NU will open the tournament at 9 a.m. (CT) against No. 16 LSU on Thursday, Feb. 12. The game will be televised on ESPN2 and can be heard across the Huskers Radio Network.

  1. Bella Bacon, who played in 53 of the Huskers’ 58 games last year, made her first start and appearance of the season today.
  2. Nebraska totaled 12 home runs on the weekend.
  3. Jordy Frahm surpassed 700 career strikeouts, as she entered today with 696 and notched 101 to total 706.
  4. Frahm’s 10 Ks today marked her first double-digit strikeout effort of the season.
