UNDATED — Tax season is about to begin as 1099s and W-2s arrive in mailboxes across Nebraska.

Some changes to tax filings are expected this year, with the White House describing them as part of a comprehensive tax cut.

The changes include a higher standard deduction for singles and joint filers, fewer items taxed at certain levels and an increased child tax credit. These are moves that could provide financial relief for many Nebraskans.

Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb., said the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed July 4 is now taking effect and that Americans should begin seeing more money in their pockets as refunds are issued.

"It is now going to start working, and as Americans get their refunds, they are going to have more money in their pockets," Flood said. "We are making progress in Washington, and I could not be more proud to be part of a Congress that is actually using regular order to fund the government for the first time since 2018."

Flood said that lawmakers are also working on health insurance bipartisan solutions, pointing to ongoing budget negotiations and efforts to fund the government before Jan. 30.

The Internal Revenue Service will begin accepting tax returns on Jan. 26, with the filing and payment deadline remaining April 15.
