NORFOLK, Neb. — An investigation into reports of shots fired near downtown Norfolk is leading authorities to press charges against a boy.

Norfolk Police say officers responded to reports of gunshots in the area of North 9th St. and Koenigstein Ave. around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday. According to a news release, officers heard another gunshot, searched the area and found an underage boy unconscious on a terrace about four blocks away.

Police say officers found an AR-style pistol with a round chambered. The release said the gun’s lower receiver appeared to be privately manufactured and didn’t have a serial number or manufacturer markings.

Officers administered a breath test and the boy had a blood alcohol concentration of .226. Police say the boy admitted to drinking and shooting the gun multiple times. He said he did it because he was angry, but didn’t direct the shots at any specific person or property.

Police say they haven’t received any reports of injuries, property damage or bullet impacts.

The boy was arrested for unlawful possession of a handgun, disturbing the peace, and minor in consumption of alcohol. He is now in a juvenile detention center pending a court hearing.
