FREMONT, Neb. — Nebraska elected officials are responding after a high school student was struck by an SUV during an anti-ICE protest at Fremont High School.

U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts said in a post on X that he is praying for the injured student and emphasized that political disagreements should not lead to violence. “We must all remember that we can disagree politically and not resort to violence as a response,” Ricketts wrote. He added, “I expect that all high school administrations will make sure all students have a safe and productive learning environment and take appropriate disciplinary actions when necessary.”

Gov. Jim Pillen also issued a statement following the incident, stressing that political violence is unacceptable. “Here’s a fundamental truth we should all agree upon: Political violence — no matter what — is never okay,” Pillen said. He added that there is still more to learn about the situation and said, “We trust that local law enforcement will carry out a thorough and complete investigation.” Pillen also emphasized that the freedom to peacefully assemble is a cornerstone of American government and said he is praying for the student’s recovery.

U.S. Rep. Mike Flood (NE-1) said video of the incident was disturbing and called for a full investigation. “This is not what we do in Nebraska,” Flood said in a statement. “The video of the girl being hit by a car at the school protest is disturbing.” Flood added that initial reports indicated the student was alert and talking when she was taken away and said, “We are praying for her and her well-being.”

U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer said in a post on X that violence has no place in peaceful demonstrations. “In Nebraska, we respect the right of people to peacefully protest,” Fischer wrote. “Disrupting such a peaceful protest with violence is never okay, and I hope the person involved is identified.” She added that she is praying for the injured student.

U.S. Rep. Don Bacon (NE-2) also commented on the incident, calling for accountability. “We have the right to peaceful protest,” Bacon wrote on X. “The driver of this car should be held accountable for using their vehicle to assault a legal protestor.” He added, “Let us be decent towards each other and respect differences of opinions. Decency, patience, kindness and empathy.”

State Sen. John Cavanaugh described the incident as horrifying and emphasized the importance of protecting the right to protest. “Absolutely horrifying,” Cavanaugh wrote on X. “Every Nebraskan should be able to peacefully protest.” He added, “My thoughts are with the victim and all of these kids. I hope law enforcement finds the driver and they are held accountable.”

Authorities have not released additional details as the investigation continues.
