Early morning head-on crash claims life of driver
Highway 287 near W. County Road 54E
LA PORTE, Colo. - At about 4:40a.m. today, the Colorado State Patrol responded to a crash involving a truck-trailer and a sedan.
A Freightliner hauling a trailer and a Toyota Corolla on southbound Highway 287 near West County Road 54E (milepost 355) in Larimer County collided.
Preliminary investigation indicates the semi was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it collided head-on with the northbound Toyota. Both vehicles caught fire as a result of the crash. The driver of the Toyota was extricated from the vehicle, and an adult passenger in that same vehicle was trapped inside.
The 20-year-old female driver of the Toyota was transported to a local area hospital with serious injuries. The 21-year-old male passenger of the Toyota was pronounced dead on scene. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Larimer County Coroner after next of kin notifications.
The driver of the semi, David Perez Carillo, a 24-year-old male from New York, was arrested and charged with the following:
- Vehicular Homicide-Reckless
- Vehicular Assault-Reckless
- Driving Vehicle on Wrong Side of a Divided Highway
The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is the lead investigating agency. The exact cause of the crash is still yet to be determined.
Highway 287 roadway was closed for approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes.
Arrests and charges are merely accusations until and unless a suspect is convicted of a crime. All suspects and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
