Nebraska State Patrol arrests teen after high-speed I-80 pursuit near Sutherland
SUTHERLAND, Neb. - An 18-year-old Colorado man was arrested Thursday evening following a high-speed pursuit and search in western Nebraska, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.
The incident began at about 6:30 p.m. MT when a trooper observed an Infiniti Q50 traveling more than 100 miles per hour on Interstate 80 near Big Springs. When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to yield and fled eastbound on I-80, prompting a pursuit.
Authorities said the vehicle reached speeds of up to 140 miles per hour and passed other vehicles on the shoulder during the pursuit. Near Sutherland at mile marker 155, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deployed spike strips, which successfully slowed the vehicle.
The car exited I-80 at the Sutherland interchange and came to a stop on Highway 25. The driver fled on foot, while the passenger immediately surrendered at the scene.
Troopers and Lincoln County deputies searched the area for about an hour before locating the driver, who was taken into custody without further incident.
A search of the vehicle revealed psilocybin mushrooms, THC edibles, drug paraphernalia and a bottle of alcohol, authorities said.
The driver was lodged in the Lincoln County Jail on charges including flight to avoid arrest, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, no operator’s license and additional offenses. The passenger, also an 18-year-old male from Colorado, was cited for minor in possession of alcohol and possession of drug paraphernalia.
