Scottsbluff police cite driver after pedestrian struck, vehicle leaves scene
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. - Scottsbluff police cited an 88-year-old driver following a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash Christmas Eve at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Highway 26.
Officers with the Scottsbluff Police Department responded to the crash at approximately 5:05 p.m. on Dec. 24. While officers were en route, they were informed the vehicle involved had left the scene.
Upon arrival, officers contacted a 68-year-old male pedestrian who had been struck while crossing Fifth Avenue. Police said the pedestrian was crossing during the designated crossing period when a vehicle turning northbound from Highway 26 onto Fifth Avenue struck him.
Before emergency crews arrived, several bystanders stopped to check on the pedestrian’s condition. He was transported by Regional West Emergency Medical Services to Regional West Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries.
Following an investigation, officers identified Joan G. Siegfried, 88, as the driver of the vehicle, a silver 2019 Buick LaCrosse. Siegfried was issued a citation for leaving the scene of an injury accident.
The Scottsbluff Fire Department, Regional West Emergency Medical Services, Regional West Medical Center and the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the incident, including the initial search for the vehicle.
The Scottsbluff Police Department thanked the citizens who stopped to assist the injured pedestrian and reminded motorists of the importance of remaining at the scene of any crash and immediately reporting incidents to authorities.
