Kyle man sentenced to four years for causing deadly drunk driving crash

KYLE, S.D. – A Kyle man has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for causing a deadly crash while driving drunk.
Kevin Hunter, 33, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter after prosecutors said he was intoxicated and driving more than 80 miles per hour on May 15, 2024, when he crossed into oncoming traffic near Kyle and hit a van. A passenger in that vehicle was killed.
Investigators said Hunter fled the scene instead of calling for help, and later lied about where he had been that night. In handing down the sentence — the highest within the applicable guideline range — Judge Theeler noted Hunter’s history of DUI convictions and said the punishment was necessary to protect the public.
Hunter was indicted by a federal grand jury in July 2024 and entered his guilty plea on Sept. 2, 2025.
The FBI and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division investigated the case.
