Rosebud man sentenced to ten months for failing to register as a sex offender

ROSEBUD, S.D. - A 35-year-old Rosebud man has been sentenced to 10 months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender. John Larvie was required to register following a 2019 conviction in Rosebud Sioux Tribal Court for aggravated sexual abuse. According to court records, Larvie used force to engage in or attempt a sexual act with a victim and assaulted the victim with shod feet.
Shortly after that conviction, Larvie attempted to purchase an AR-15–style rifle. Prosecutors say he falsely claimed on the ATF Form 4473 that he had never been convicted of a domestic violence crime.
He was later sentenced in 2020 to 38 months in federal prison for assault with a dangerous weapon and making false statements during the attempted firearm purchase.
In addition to attempting to buy the gun, Larvie had also stomped on his dating partner’s chest, while wearing boots, with the intent to do bodily harm.
Larvie began supervised release on May 6, 2025, while living in Rosebud. However, he did not update his sex offender registration until June 4, 2025. Federal law requires sex offenders to update their registration within three business days when they relocate or change employment or student status.
