Driver in police pursuit charged after crash near Auburn

AUBURN - John Newberry, 51, of Omaha is charged with operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest and criminal mischief on Oct. 31.
A Nemaha County Sheriff’s Office affidavit says Richardson County informed Nemaha County they were pursuing a Toyota at speeds of 100 mph. A deputy set up a tire deflation device south of Auburn and says the Toyota was driven on the wrong side of Highway 75 and collided with a Chevrolet Traverse.
The affidavit says Newberry and a woman in the Traverse were extricated and taken to a hospital.
A Jackson County deputy in Kansas reported the pursuit began because Newberry and a passenger in the Toyota were suspected of stealing from the Walmart in Holton.
A habitual criminal charge alleges previous offenses, including receiving stolen property in Oklahoma in 1998, aggravated assault in Arkansas in 2000 and arson in Douglas County in 2022.
A bond of $250,000 was set in county court.
