NEBRASKA CITY – Nebraska City police introduced new K9 Bebe at Monday’s city council meeting.

Police Chief Ben Murry thanked city commissioners and generous donations from the public for the addition of a second K9 unit to join Sgt. Chris Richardson and K9 Alex.

Murry said Ofc. Jake Stenka and Bebe have completed narcotics certification and Bebe is able to be deployed in that capacity. Bebe is still scheduled for academy training in tracking and handler protection.

Ofc. Stenka attended a K9 medic course in Kansas City this summer and began narcotics training with Bebe in September.

Stenka: “His favorite thing to do is go to work. Just as I’m standing here watching him, he’s looking for something here, which is what we want. These dogs … it’s their favorite thing to do. It’s fun for him and they get to play if all goes well.”

Bebe is a two-year-old Belgian Malinois/shepherd mix from Hungary that was imported from a vendor in Arkansas.

He said while Bebe is the smallest in his class, he can do all the things the larger dogs can do.

Stenka: “I’m told from my classmates who were the bite suit that he has the hardest bite.”

Last December city commissioners gave approval for police to seek $89,000 in donations for a second K9 unit.

Bebe has already attended a home football game and Ofc. Stenka described him as very social.
