GENOA, Neb. — Twin River Public Schools in Genoa has began construction on a new facility after a $39.9 million bond received voter approval in May 2024, addressing the school's long-standing need for expanded facilities.

The original Twin River School, constructed in 1929, has seen several upgrades over the years. Superintendent Brandi Bartels said. "An addition was added in 2001, and another in 2014, both of which will remain. However, the 1929 structure is outdated and increasingly challenging to renovate. The new additions will provide much-needed space and integrate the entire building upon completion."

Following the consolidation of Genoa, Silver Creek, and Monroe school districts into Twin River Public Schools in 2001, a key component of the bond was to centralize activities in Genoa, reducing travel time for practices.

Bartels explained, "During the major flood, we utilized Silver Creek School, with students south of the river attending classes in Silver Creek and those north of the river in Genoa. Although all classes are now in Genoa, students still had to travel to Silver Creek and Monroe for gym facilities. The new full-size gym will eliminate the need for this travel."

The new school will feature modern learning environments, two classrooms per elementary grade level, enhanced security measures for inter-building student movement, and upgraded electrical and HVAC systems.

Demolition of the 1929 building is slated for May 2026. The project will connect the 2001 and 2014 additions with a hallway to the new facility, ensuring the entire complex is ready for the start of the following academic year.
