Sidney police resolve armed standoff

SIDNEY - A three-hour standoff involving an armed man at a Sidney apartment complex ended safely late Sunday night after the suspect surrendered to police.
According to the Sidney Police Department, officers were called at approximately 9:53 p.m. to the Village Way Apartments for a report of a physical disturbance and assault involving a barricaded, armed individual.
Police said negotiators and tactical officers worked for about three hours before the suspect, identified as 57-year-old George J. McNeil of Sidney, surrendered peacefully. No officers or civilians were injured.
McNeil was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including felony terroristic threats, third-degree assault and criminal mischief - both misdemeanors.
The Sidney Police Department said assistance was provided at the scene by the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office.
“We want to assure the community that there is no ongoing threat in the area,” the department said in a statement. “We thank the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office for their crucial support and commend all officers for their calm and professional handling of this volatile situation.”
Police added that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
