NORFOLK, Neb. — Nobody is hurt after a field caught on fire Saturday afternoon in Northeast Nebraska.
The Norfolk Fire Department says it happened shortly after 12:30 about 2.5 miles southeast of the airport. Crews used grass rigs to fight the fire that was spreading in a CRP field. They extinguished it before it could consume the entire field.
Firefighters remained on scene for an hour after extinguishing the flames to overhaul the site and attempt to prevent reignition.
Investigators believe a hot bearing on a shredder that was being used to mow the grass caused the fire.
Five grass rigs, one fire engine, and three water tankers responded to the scene along with 18 firefighters. The Madison Fire Department provided assistance.
