HASTINGS, Neb. — A new $14 million housing project is officially underway in Hastings, bringing a mix of workforce and senior housing to the community.

The Cedar Park development led by Hoppe Development broke ground Thursday, with local leaders and housing partners on hand to celebrate the start of construction.

When complete, the project will feature 34 affordable senior units and 24 workforce family units, offering housing for residents earning up to 120% of the area’s median income.

Developer Fred Hoppe said the project has been in the works for about two years and represents a major step forward in addressing the state’s housing shortage.

“Everybody in Nebraska deserves a home,” said Hoppe. “You can’t have economic growth without housing, it’s where employees spend the night. Projects like this help communities grow and provide homes for the people who make that possible.”

The senior housing component represents a $9.5 million investment supported by state and federal low-income housing tax credits, a Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund grant and loans from the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA).

The workforce housing portion totals about $4.6 million, funded through the Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund, a $200,000 cash match from the City of Hastings and additional tax increment financing and rural community recovery funds.

Hoppe said blending the senior and family housing units creates a more balanced neighborhood and helps stabilize the area.

Construction is expected to take about 18 months, with completion targeted for late 2026.
