VALENTINE, Neb. — There’s now an easier way to help reduce the growing number of stray cats in Valentine. The Sandhills Area Foundation and Valentine Cat Rescue have formed a new partnership that allows donations made to support the rescue to be fully tax-deductible under the foundation’s charitable status.

As News Channel Nebraska recently reported, Valentine has been facing an increasing feral cat problem.

“What happens if you don’t do anything about them? It’s already a big problem, but if they keep reproducing, it will only get worse,” said Tammy Lutter with Valentine Cat Rescue during a recent City Council meeting. “They’ll start getting sick, and they’ll start getting other animals sick.”

Experts estimate that one unspayed female cat and her offspring can produce more than 20,000 cats in just four years — a statistic that underscores why organizers say quick action is essential.

“This agreement makes it easier for our generous community to contribute to the ongoing care and safety of local cats,” Lutter said. “We’re deeply grateful to the Sandhills Area Foundation for helping us make a bigger impact.”

Valentine Cat Rescue is entirely volunteer-run and relies solely on donations. Every dollar goes toward food, medical care, and safe housing for cats within the city limits.

“We’re also looking for new volunteers to join our efforts,” Lutter added. “Whether you can help feed, foster, transport, or simply lend a hand, your time makes a huge difference.”

Those interested in helping can reach Valentine Cat Rescue at Valentinecatrescue@gmail.com or through the organization’s Facebook page.

Individuals and businesses may make donations payable to the Sandhills Area Foundation, noting “Valentine Cat Rescue Fund” in the memo line. Contributions will be acknowledged in accordance with IRS charitable contribution guidelines.
