Wayne Airport brings in old WWII plane for event
WAYNE, Neb.— The Wayne Municipal Airport sounded a little different on Saturday, celebrating the end of WWII, bringing out model planes and even a real one.
“This awesome plane here is a 1943 Taylorcraft,” Airport Operations Manager Travis Meyer said.
More planes were supposed to fly in but the weather did not stop this one, held in Norfolk, this plane was used in the war to scope out enemy lines.
Airport Operations Manager Travis Meyer knows just how special the timing of this event is.
“It is the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII and this time frame is about the time the soldiers would be coming home, so we thought let’s put this all together and have a fun event,” Meyer said.
The free event held in the airport hanger partnered with Wayne State to play music from the time.
Though for Meyer it also shone a light on the airport itself.
“I think sometimes we get tunnel focused on let’s just keep doing this, keep doing this, keep doing this,” Meyer said. “Well an event like this is great. I guarantee you there’s people in there that have never been to our airport or don’t really know much about airplanes or aviation. But maybe this is going to spark something and they’ll come back.”
