WNCC’s Gonzalez-Orozco named Region IX South Defensive Player of the Week

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. - Western Nebraska Community College volleyball libero Alex Gonzalez-Orozco was named the Region IX South Defensive Player of the Week for her play in helping the Cougars to a 2-1 record last week.
Gonzalez-Orozco, a Gering High graduate, earned her second defensive player of the week honors on Monday.
Gonzalez-Orozco had a strong week as she had 35 digs and two aces in a 5-set heart-breaking loss to Casper on Sept. 30. She came back and had 20 digs in a 5-set win over Trinidad and capped off the week with a 22-dig, 2-ace performance against Otero on Saturday.
For the season, Gonzalez-Orozco has 451 digs and now has 702 for her career to become one of only 44 players in Cougar history to register 700 career digs. She needs 98 more digs to register her 800th career dig and become only one of 30 players to get that mark.
The Cougars will have two home matches this week beginning with a contest tonight when they host North Platte Community College at 6 p.m. and then a match on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host Southeast Community College.
Other Region IX Player of the Weeks included Northeastern Junior College’s Kiera Loe-Outrey as the South Offensive Player of the Week, Casper’s Penina Leota as the North Offensive Player of the Week, and Central Wyoming’s Hallie Reeder Johnson as the North Defensive Player of the Week.
