Barricade in Akron ends in fatal self-inflicted shooting
AKRON, Colo. - A standoff in Akron ended tragically Thursday afternoon after a suspect barricaded himself inside his home and later died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded around 10:48 a.m. to the 200 block of Cedar Avenue following reports of a neighbor dispute involving firearms. Authorities say the suspect, identified as 60-year-old Jim Muggenberg, initially refused to come out of his home and made threats toward deputies.
When Muggenberg barricaded himself inside, deputies obtained an arrest warrant and requested assistance from the Northeast Regional SWAT Team. Law enforcement issued an alert advising residents to avoid the area, and local schools enacted safety protocols.
After several hours without contact, SWAT officers deployed gas into the home and entered around 2:50 p.m. Muggenberg was found deceased inside. An autopsy will be conducted in the coming days.
The sheriff’s office thanked multiple agencies, including the Northeast Regional SWAT Team, WY Communications, Akron Volunteer Fire Department, Washington County Ambulance Service, and local law enforcement for their assistance.
Sheriff Robbie Furrow expressed appreciation for the community’s patience, noting that “operations like this can take several hours” and that safety remains the department’s top priority.
No further information will be released, authorities said.
