NORFOLK, Neb.—The Norfolk Action Committee is gearing up to raise awareness and education on pedestrian safety.

The committee met Friday to discuss possible options to get the word out about safety on roads, specifically for pedestrians.

“One of the first things we’re going to be working on is some educational programs for National Pedestrian Awareness month, which is the month of October,” Assistant City Engineer Anna Allen said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration declared National Pedestrian Safety Month and now the city council is planning to proclaim the same for the City of Norfolk.

This committee plans to roll out resources and information to the community to enforce the need for safety.

“We want to make sure that everybody’s safe, everybody watch out for each other and we want to eliminate the traffic crashes,” Allen said.

According to the Nebraska DOT, in 2024, 19 pedestrians were killed in Nebraska.

While working with local businesses, schools and city officials, this committee hopes to bring some light to the cause.

“What we’re hoping for is to get more educational materials out, so working with the school. We’re looking at doing a coloring contest within the schools,” Allen said.

The proclamation for the City of Norfolk will happen in Monday’s city council meeting.
