STANTON, Neb. – The Stanton Board of Education has officially set a special election for Nov 4, seeking voter approval for a $28 million bond. The proposed bond aims to address pressing infrastructure and educational needs at Stanton Elementary, which has had outdated facilities for decades.

Since 1984, Stanton Elementary has operated from modular buildings that have surpassed their expected lifespan.

Superintendent Darren Soucie emphasized the challenges, stating, "When you can't maintain infrastructure, you have issues with fire sprinklers, tornado shelters, and space to accommodate modern educational needs."

Despite efforts to redesign, remodel, and improve security, the limitations of the existing structures are evident. The bond would fund the construction of a new building to house the early childhood development center, uniting all students in one designated area for the first time.

Currently, the center is a block away, with broken concrete posing safety hazards for children, especially in inclement weather.

The proposed upgrades extend beyond the classroom. The current gym doubles as a lunchroom and gym for PE. The new building will have a commons area where lunch will be served and a separate gym which would allow for PE and recess during bad weather.

Moreover, the bond would address critical ADA accessibility issues, including ramps, new restrooms, and accessible storm shelters. Soucie noted the current storm shelter is only accessible via stairs, posing a significant challenge for students In a wheelchair or on crutches.

With neighboring school districts experiencing bond rejections, Stanton officials are emphasizing the urgency of the situation. Soucie stated, "The price only goes up when you build it later. You want to do it right the first time. Education has changed since the sixties, and there are some upgrades that need to be done."

If approved, the bond would allow the district to demolish the old modulars, relocate two houses on the property, and begin construction at the end of the 2025 school year, with an anticipated completion date by the start of the 2028 school year.
