St. Francis man sentenced to seven years for resisting and impeding federal officers and possessing meth bound for distribution

ST. FRANCIS, S.D. - A 30-year-old St. Francis man has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison after pleading guilty to assaulting, resisting and impeding federal officers and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Derek McCloskey's charges stemmed from a two-hour pursuit in May 2024 that spanned several counties and involved the U.S. Marshals Service, Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Bennett County Sheriff’s Office.
During the chase, authorities said McCloskey hit multiple law enforcement vehicles, causing significant damage. He and a passenger also threw large quantities of methamphetamine and a rifle from the vehicle. Officers later recovered the rifle and about 25 grams of pure meth. Data from McCloskey’s phone linked him to meth distribution on the Rosebud Indian Reservation.
McCloskey was indicted by a federal grand jury in May 2024 and pleaded guilty in June 2025.
In addition to his prison sentence, he was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, nearly $25,000 in restitution, and a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case was investigated by multiple agencies, including tribal, county, federal and Bureau of Indian Affairs law enforcement.
